# How to install Tallos on Windows 10 and 11

## What do you need before installing Tallos on Windows?

You need a PC running **Windows 10 or later** and a Tallos account. Tallos is a desktop [ADE](https://runtallos.com/what-is-an-ade) that runs the AI coding agents you already use, each in its own git workspace, so a few developer tools make the first session smoother.

- **Windows 10 or later.** Check it in Settings → System → About.
- **A Tallos account.** Free sign-up at [/signup](https://runtallos.com/signup).
- **Git for Windows.** Tallos workspaces are real git worktrees, so `git --version` must work in PowerShell.
- **Node.js.** On Windows, every one-click agent install in [Connections](https://runtallos.com/features/agent-connections) uses the vendor's npm package, so Node.js (which includes npm) must be installed first.
- **At least one agent CLI**, such as Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI. Optional at install time; you can add it later.
- **WSL (optional).** If you keep repositories inside WSL, Tallos can run terminals through it.

## How do I install Tallos on Windows, step by step?

1. **Create your Tallos account** — Go to [/signup](https://runtallos.com/signup). Enter your full name and work email, then your role, team size and the agents you already use. Under **Download for**, choose **Windows · 10 or later**, accept the terms and click **Create account & download**.
2. **Download the installer** — The download page opens with the Windows installer (.exe) ready. If the Windows build is not published yet, your account is created and the link is emailed to you as soon as it is.
3. **Run the installer** — Double-click the downloaded .exe. The installer copies Tallos to your PC and creates a Tallos shortcut on the desktop and in the Start menu.
4. **Answer SmartScreen if it appears** — If Windows shows **Windows protected your PC**, click **More info**, check that the publisher and file name are what you expect, then click **Run anyway**. Only do this for the file you downloaded from your Tallos account.
5. **Open Tallos and pick your language and agent** — Start Tallos from the shortcut. The welcome screen asks for your language and shows the agent CLIs it found under **Which AI agent do you use?** Pick one and click **Continue**.
6. **Open your first project** — Click **Choose a folder** and select a folder with your code, use **Clone from a URL**, or click **Skip for now** to do it later.

## Why does Windows SmartScreen warn about the installer?

SmartScreen warns about downloads it has not seen often yet, even signed ones. It is a reputation check, not a virus verdict. Release installers of Tallos are code-signed, and **More info** shows the publisher so you can confirm what you are running before clicking **Run anyway**.

If your company manages the PC, SmartScreen or an allow-list policy may block the installer completely. In that case ask IT to approve it; do not try to work around the policy.

## Which shell does Tallos use on Windows: PowerShell, CMD or WSL?

Tallos uses PowerShell by default, and you can switch the default to Command Prompt or WSL under **Settings → Terminal**. WSL shows up as an option automatically when it is installed and working. The **+** menu on the tab bar also opens a one-off tab in any shell without changing your default.

## How do I install Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI on Windows from Tallos?

Open **Settings → Connections**. Each official agent CLI has a card with its status: **Not installed**, **Installed, not signed in** or **Connected**. Click **Install** and Tallos shows the vendor's npm command, then runs it. After that, **Sign in** opens the agent's own login in a terminal, and **Use API key** stores a key in Windows' secure storage for the agents that accept one.

## What happens the first time you open Tallos on Windows?

You get the same two-step welcome as on macOS. Step one sets the interface language and your default agent. Under **Advanced** there is **Let agents run commands without asking**, and it is **off** by default: agents ask before running commands until you decide otherwise. Step two opens your first project.

## Troubleshooting: what if Tallos does not work on my Windows PC?

- **The installer is blocked.** SmartScreen or a company policy stopped it. Use **More info → Run anyway** on a personal PC, or ask IT on a managed one.
- **No agents detected.** The CLI is not installed or not on the PATH Tallos sees. Open PowerShell, run `claude`, `codex` or `gemini`; if the command is not found, install it from Settings → Connections or with the vendor's npm command.
- **Install says Needs Node.js first.** Install Node.js, then click **Refresh** on the Connections page. You may need to restart Tallos so it sees the new PATH.
- **Workspace creation fails.** Check that Git for Windows is installed and the folder is a git repository. If the base branch is missing, run `git fetch origin` in the project.
- **WSL is not offered.** Tallos only lists WSL when it is installed and responding. Run `wsl --status` in PowerShell to check.
- **`tallos` is not recognized in an outside terminal.** Register the CLI under Settings → General → Tallos CLI, then open a new terminal so it picks up the updated PATH.
