Remote workspaces: run your agents on a bigger machine over SSH

Updated September 29, 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer

A Tallos remote workspace is a workspace that lives on another machine you reach over SSH. Git, terminals and your coding agents run on that host, while the sidebar, editor, diff review and browser stay in the Tallos app on your Mac or Windows PC. Agents keep running when your laptop sleeps or disconnects, and Tallos reattaches when you come back.

  • Any machine you can reach over SSH
  • Agents keep running through disconnects and app restarts
  • Imports hosts from ~/.ssh/config, jump hosts, proxy commands
  • One-click port forwarding for remote dev servers
  • Your machines only: Tallos does not sell hosting

What is a remote workspace in Tallos?

A remote workspace is a Tallos workspace whose files, git worktree, terminals and agents live on a remote host connected over SSH. You pick the host when you create the workspace; everything else works like a local parallel workspace.

Use it when your laptop is not the right place for the work: long builds, big test suites, a GPU box, a beefier desktop at the office, or a cloud VM that already has your repo, tools and credentials. Running several agents at once is heavy, and a remote host lets you run more agents in parallel without your fans spinning up.

How do I add an SSH host to Tallos?

  1. 1

    Open Settings → SSH

Click Add Target. The host form opens in a dialog.

  2. 2

Fill in or import the host

Enter host or alias, user, port and an optional identity file (the SSH agent is used by default). Or open the OpenSSH config picker, search ~/.ssh/config including Included files, and prefill the form from one host.

  3. 3

    Enter your passphrase

If the key has a passphrase, Tallos asks for it the first time. Passphrases stay in memory for the session.

  4. 4

    Test and save

Click Test to check the connection, then Save.

How do I run an agent on a remote machine?

  1. 1

    Add the project

Add the repo with the SSH host as its location, or open any remote folder from the file picker. Git must be installed on the host for repo workspaces.

  2. 2

Create a workspace on the host

Choose the host under Run on. Tallos runs git worktree add on the remote, so each task gets its own branch and working copy there. New to worktrees? Read git worktrees for AI agents.

  3. 3

    Start the agent

Launch Claude Code, Codex or any other agent. It runs on the remote host, so install and sign in to it there; logins on your laptop do not carry over.

  4. 4

    Review and ship

Edit files inline, read the diff, commit and push from Tallos as usual.

What happens when my connection drops?

Nothing is lost. The agent keeps running on the host. Remote workspaces show a live status (connected, reconnecting, disconnected), and when the link comes back Tallos reattaches the terminals and replays their output, including full-screen agent interfaces.

  • Survives closing the app. Remote terminal sessions keep running after you quit Tallos, and come back attached with their scrollback when you reconnect.
  • No countdown by default. Keep terminals alive until reset is on for every host. Turn it off to set a timeout after disconnect, from 60 seconds to 7 days.
  • Stop on purpose. End sessions with End Remote Terminals, Reset Relay, by removing the host, or by closing the tab.

How do I open a remote dev server in my browser?

Use the Ports tab in the right sidebar. Tallos lists the ports your remote processes are listening on, and one click forwards a port to your machine. You can also add, edit or remove forwards by hand. Forwards survive app restarts and reconnects, and privileged remote ports are remapped locally (remote 80 becomes local 10080).

The built-in browser works with remote workspaces too. A setting controls whether its traffic and DNS go through the SSH host or through your computer.

Does it work with jump hosts, proxies and security keys?

Yes. Open Advanced Connection on a host to configure it.

NeedHow Tallos handles it
Bastion or jump hostJump Host field, equivalent to ProxyJump / ssh -J
Tunnels such as Cloudflare AccessProxy Command field, e.g. cloudflared access ssh --hostname %h
Faster setupReuse SSH connection uses OpenSSH multiplexing, on by default
Kerberos / GSSAPIHosts with GSSAPIAuthentication yes connect through your system OpenSSH
FIDO2 security keysed25519-sk and ecdsa-sk keys use system OpenSSH, so touch and PIN prompts work
Open in VS CodeOpen in → VS Code launches Remote-SSH on the same host and path

You can also download a remote file, or a whole folder when the connection supports SFTP, with a right-click in the file explorer. Scheduled automations can target SSH hosts as well.

What does the remote machine need?

  • SSH access with a key, the SSH agent, a security key or Kerberos.
  • Git, for repo workspaces.
  • Your agent CLIs, installed and signed in on the host.
  • Build tools on some hosts. On first connect Tallos installs a small relay on the remote. If the host has to compile it and lacks make, a C++ compiler and python3, files, git and the editor still work, but remote terminals do not until you install them and reconnect.

Tallos does not sell or host remote machines. Remote workspaces always use hosts you control, and your agents keep using the subscriptions and API keys you already have. Terminals behave just like the local Tallos terminal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run Claude Code or Codex on a remote server with Tallos?

Yes. Add the server under Settings → SSH, create a workspace with that host under Run on, and start the agent. It runs on the server while you watch and review it in Tallos.

Do remote agents stop if my laptop sleeps?

No. The agent keeps running on the host. When the connection returns, Tallos reattaches the terminal and replays the output.

Do remote terminals survive closing Tallos?

Yes. Remote sessions keep running after you quit and come back attached with their scrollback. By default they stay alive until you end them; you can set a timeout from 60 seconds to 7 days instead.

Can Tallos use my existing SSH config?

Yes. The OpenSSH config picker searches ~/.ssh/config, including files it includes, and prefills a host. Jump hosts and proxy commands are supported.

How do I preview a web app running on the remote host?

Open the Ports tab and forward the port with one click, then open it in the built-in browser or your own browser. Forwards persist across restarts and reconnects.

Does Tallos provide the remote machine?

No. Tallos connects to machines you already control over SSH. It does not sell hosting, and your agents use your own subscriptions or API keys.

Do I need to install my agents on the remote host?

Yes. Agents run on the host, so install and sign in to each agent CLI there. Logins on your laptop do not carry over.
